Discover the story behind Backyard Texas Grill, a Texas-inspired outdoor cooking blog focused on backyard grilling, smoker recipes, pellet grill recipes, backyard entertaining, family cookouts, and easy grilling recipes anyone can master.

Why I Started Backyard Texas Grill
There’s just something about the smell of smoke drifting through the backyard.
Friends gathered around the grill. Kids running through the yard. The sound of laughter and overlapping conversations while people wait for dinner plates to be filled. The slow rhythm of outdoor cooking while life settles down for a little while.
I love all of it.
Truthfully, I think a lot of us do.
Whether you’re cooking burgers for the family on a summer evening or feeding a crowd at a huge family cookout, backyard grilling becomes more than just preparing food. It becomes an experience. A memory. A reason for people to slow down long enough to reconnect.
And these days, that matters more than ever.
That love of feeding people, creating memorable experiences, and building an inviting atmosphere is really the heart behind Backyard Texas Grill.
It’s All About the Experience!

Long before I ever started this blog—and even before I owned a Traeger—I fell in love with outdoor cooking. I loved the process. I loved experimenting. But more than anything, I loved seeing people enjoy the food.
There’s honestly nothing more satisfying than watching someone take a bite of a perfectly cooked ribeye, a smoky brisket taco, or a juicy burger fresh off the grill and instantly smile.
Food makes people happy.
And I like making people happy.
If you can relate to that, this blog is for you.
Texan Through and Through

I’ve spent most of my life in Texas, and I’ve always appreciated the culture here. Relaxed. Welcoming. Casual. Food-friendly. Laid-back without being lazy. Around here, hospitality matters.
Texas BBQ culture isn’t just about smoking meats or perfecting a rub recipe. It’s about bringing people together. It’s about tradition. Pride. Community.
So, pull up a chair. Grab a plate. Stay awhile.
That’s how we do it, here in the Lone Star State.
That spirit of hospitality is something I’ve tried to cultivate in my own backyard over the years. Our home has slowly become the gathering place for family dinners, graduation parties, birthday celebrations, church gatherings, game days, and holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Cinco de Mayo.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
There’s something special about backyard entertaining that feels different from everyday life. People relax. Phones get put down. Conversations get longer. Memories happen naturally around good food and good company.
Maybe it’s a Southern thing. Maybe it’s just human nature.
Either way, I’m here for it.
My Passion for Grilling

People often ask how I got started grilling. The truth is, I didn’t train at culinary school or grow up competing in BBQ competitions. I learned the old-fashioned way: trial and error.
Some cooks turned out incredible. Some…not so much. But every mistake taught me something.
I started cooking for family events first. Then church small groups. Then gatherings with friends. Over time, my grilling skills slowly developed. I learned heat management, timing, smoke levels, seasoning balance, and how different cuts of meat respond to different cooking methods.
The more I learned, the more I realized outdoor cooking had become a creative outlet for me.
Some people sketch or paint.
I flip meat.
And somewhere along the way, I realized I genuinely loved experimenting with flavors, marinades, rubs, smoke profiles, sauces, and cooking techniques. There’s something deeply rewarding about creating a meal people truly enjoy.
And hey, if something goes wrong on the grill, you can always eat the evidence.
And Then Came the Traeger

Owning a Traeger opened up a whole new world for me.
Pellet grill recipes taught me patience and consistency in ways I’d never experienced before. Smoking meats low and slow requires a different mindset than traditional grilling. You learn quickly that every grill has its own personality, quirks, strengths, and challenges. But honestly, that’s part of the fun.
I still enjoy charcoal grilling and traditional gas grilling, too. Each setup teaches you something different about outdoor cooking. Heat control. Smoke flavor. Direct versus indirect cooking. Timing. Texture.
And before long, I found myself experimenting with all sorts of smoker recipes and backyard grilling techniques.
One weekend I’d be reverse searing steaks. The next I’d be testing smoked pork tenderloin. Then came brisket. Then ribs. Then smoked queso.
And eventually I realized: this hobby had become something much bigger than I ever expected.
And let’s not stop with meats and sides. I’ve even learned to bake on the smoker. Skillet brownies? Absolutely. Dump cake in cast iron? Even better.
When Grilling Became About More Than Food

A couple of years ago, something shifted for me. The backyard stopped feeling like just a place to cook. It became a gathering place, a place where family and friends could slow down, relax, laugh together, and share a meal.
Feeding people was rewarding in a completely different way than I expected. And over time, I started developing recipes people regularly requested.
Things like:
- Reverse Seared Steaks: Slow-cooked to perfection before finishing over high heat, these steaks deliver a juicy center with a flavorful crust that steak lovers can’t resist.
- Smoked Pulled Pork: Tender, smoky, and packed with flavor, this slow-cooked pulled pork is perfect for sandwiches, tacos, sliders, or feeding a hungry crowd at your next backyard gathering.
- Beef Brisket: A true Texas BBQ classic, this brisket is smoked low and slow until it’s juicy, flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.
- Pork Tenderloin: Lean, juicy, and surprisingly versatile, smoked pork tenderloin takes on incredible flavor while staying tender and easy enough for weeknight grilling.
- St. Louis Style Ribs: Smoky, meaty, and coated in rich BBQ flavor, these ribs are cooked low and slow until they’re perfectly tender with just the right bite.
- Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken: Juicy chicken wrapped in smoky bacon and filled with bold flavor, this crowd-pleasing recipe feels special without being complicated.
People kept asking for recipes, tips, techniques, and grilling advice. I found myself sharing tricks and ideas in one-on-one conversations constantly.
And eventually I started wondering: Why not share this beyond my own backyard?
That thought became the beginning of Backyard Texas Grill.

I wanted a place where regular people could learn outdoor cooking without feeling intimidated. A place where beginners could build confidence. A place filled with easy grilling recipes, approachable techniques, and real-life cooking experiences.
Because the truth is, I’m not trying to present myself as some celebrity pitmaster. I’m just a regular guy who loves grilling for a crowd, learning new techniques, and feeding people.
Most of what I know came through experience—and a whole lot of mistakes.
The Creative Side of Outdoor Cooking

One of my favorite things about grilling is the creativity involved. There’s always a new marinade to test. A different rub combination to try. A fresh sauce to experiment with. A new technique to master.
And honestly, that sense of adventure is part of what keeps outdoor cooking exciting.
Recipes like:
- Smoked Meatloaf – comfort food with rich smoky flavor
- Brisket Queso – cheesy Texas-style crowd food perfect for parties
- Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken – smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor
- Salmon with Mango Salsa – fresh summer grilling with a Texas twist
- Pig Shots – one of my favorite backyard appetizers
- Smoked Cream Cheese – simple, smoky, and ridiculously addictive
- Cast-Iron Peach Dump Cake – easy dessert cooking outdoors
Every recipe teaches me something new.
And when I share these recipes here, my hope is that you’ll experiment too. Maybe you’ll add your own twist. Maybe you’ll discover a new family favorite. Maybe you’ll build traditions around some of these meals the same way we have.
That’s really what this site is all about.
