Hamburger Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions

This easy Hamburger Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions turns simple ground beef into an old-fashioned comfort-food dinner. Tender mushrooms and onions cook in a rich brown gravy with crumbled ground beef, and I serve the whole thing over hot white rice.

Around here, rice and gravy just belong together.

Rice and Gravy

Rice was always a staple in our house when I was growing up. My parents were originally from Illinois, but we lived in South Texas, where rice fields are part of the landscape. My dad had some sort of connection to the Adolphus rice business. I was too young to know exactly what that connection was, but I do remember one thing very clearly: we always had plenty of rice.

And in our family, if you put rice on the dinner table, there had better be gravy to go with it.

My mom often made a creamy gravy for rice, but brown gravy was certainly welcome, too. To this day, a pile of plain white rice looks a little unfinished to me. It needs gravy.

Even leftover rice had a purpose. The next morning, Mom would warm it up and serve it for breakfast with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. We loved it.

From Salisbury Steak to Hamburger Gravy

Hamburger Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions

This hamburger gravy actually came about after I made Salisbury steak with mushroom and onion gravy. It was so good that after I'd given the Salisbury steak away, I found myself wishing I'd kept some for myself.

So I made it again—but this time I skipped making the Salisbury steak patties.

Instead, I browned and crumbled the ground beef and made that wonderful mushroom and onion gravy right in the skillet with it. It gave me all those flavors I had been craving with a much simpler cooking process.

Then, naturally, I made rice.

I interrupt this pot to confess that "good gravy" is a pet phrase for me. Only, in this case it really was. . .good gravy. Literally.

Why You'll Love This Hamburger Gravy

  • It's an easy skillet dinner made with inexpensive ground beef.
  • Mushrooms and onions give the brown gravy plenty of savory flavor.
  • There's no need to shape and cook individual hamburger patties.
  • It's delicious over rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles.
  • The finished hamburger gravy makes a great freezer meal.

  • Packet of brown gravy
  • small can cream of mushroom soup

How to Make Hamburger Gravy

This comes together so easily. You're going to be so glad you've got this gravy in your arsenal! Here's how you're going to do it.

1. Brown the ground beef

Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks. Drain excess grease if necessary. Add onions and cook until translucent.

2. Make the gravy

Combine beef broth, brown gravy mix, spices, worchestershire sauce, and cream of mushroom soup. Whisk together. Add sliced mushrooms.

Pour over the ground beef and onions. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about ten minutes.

3. Thicken the Gravy

Add a cornstarch slurry to reach your desire consistency.

What Else Can I Serve With Hamburger Gravy?

White rice will always be my first choice, but this gravy is also wonderful over:

Add green beans, peas, corn, or another simple vegetable on the side and you've got an easy, filling supper.

Can You Freeze Hamburger Gravy?

Hamburger Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions (storing in freezer containers)

Yes. Hamburger gravy makes an excellent freezer meal.

I portioned mine with cooked rice into individual containers, let everything cool, and then freeze them. That gives me a homemade meal I can pull from the freezer whenever I need an easy dinner.

You can also freeze the hamburger gravy separately and make fresh rice when you're ready to serve it.

Tips for the Best Hamburger Gravy

Hamburger Gravy with Mushrooms and Onions

Don't rush the mushrooms. Give them a chance to cook down and develop some color before making the gravy.

Cook the flour before adding the broth. A minute or so of cooking helps eliminate the raw-flour taste.

Add the broth gradually. Stirring as you add it helps keep your gravy smooth.

Adjust the consistency. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little more beef broth. If it's too thin, let it simmer uncovered for a few more minutes.

Taste before adding more salt. Beef broth and Worcestershire sauce both contribute saltiness, so season at the end if necessary.

Storage and Reheating

Store leftover hamburger gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. The gravy will thicken as it cools, so add a splash of beef broth or water when reheating if needed. For longer storage, portion the cooled gravy into freezer-safe containers and freeze.

An Easy Ground Beef Dinner Worth Keeping

This may have started as the easier cousin of my Salisbury steak, but it earned its own place at the table.

There's something awfully satisfying about a skillet full of hamburger, mushrooms, onions, and rich brown gravy. And when it's spooned over a generous helping of hot white rice?

That's comfort food.

Or, as I might say around here: good gravy.
