Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cream Pie with Graham Cracker Crust
This old-fashioned chocolate cream pie features rich homemade stovetop pudding, a graham cracker crust, and fluffy whipped cream. Easy and delicious!

Sometimes the best recipes are the ones you never intended to make. This old-fashioned chocolate cream pie started with a craving for my mom's homemade chocolate pudding and ended with one of the prettiest, most delicious pies I've made in a long time!
With rich, creamy chocolate filling, a buttery graham cracker crust, and fluffy whipped cream on top, this is the kind of simple Southern dessert that makes everybody smile.
And would you believe it all started with a bowl of leftover pudding?
A Little Chocolate Comfort from Mom's Kitchen

I've been a little under the weather lately, and when I'm not feeling my best, there's nothing quite like a little comfort food to make things better.
I was sitting at my computer working on some upcoming newsletters when I came across a picture of my mom's homemade chocolate meringue pie.
Oh, friends. One look at that rich chocolate filling and I knew exactly what I wanted.
Chocolate pudding.
Not the instant kind from a box, mind you. I wanted Mom's old-fashioned, homemade chocolate pudding. The kind you cook on the stovetop, stirring until it turns thick and creamy and absolutely irresistible.
So, I headed to the kitchen and whipped up a batch.
My original plan was simple. I'd divide the pudding into individual bowls, tuck them into the refrigerator, and enjoy a little chocolate comfort over the next few days.
There was just one problem. Mom's recipe makes a LOT of pudding!
After enjoying a bowl, I looked at what was left and realized there was no way I was going to eat all of that by myself.
That's when I started rummaging through my baking pantry and spotted a ready-made graham cracker crust.
Hmm. I wonder...
I poured the warm pudding into the crust, let it cool briefly, and popped it into the refrigerator.
A couple of hours later, I remembered I had some homemade whipped cream left over from my recent chocolate chip cookie taco adventure.
Well, why not?
I piped some pretty swirls around the edges, added a swirl in the center, and sprinkled miniature chocolate chips over the top.
And just like that, my leftover pudding had become a beautiful chocolate cream pie!
The best part? It was absolutely delicious!
Rich, creamy, perfectly chocolatey, and so easy to put together.
I hadn't planned to make a pie that day. But sometimes the sweetest things in life are the ones we never saw coming.
And this, my friends, was one very happy accident!
What Makes This Chocolate Cream Pie So Special?

There are plenty of chocolate pie recipes out there, but this one has a few things going for it.
First, we're making the chocolate filling from scratch. There's something wonderful about old-fashioned stovetop pudding, especially when it's made with cocoa powder, milk, sugar, and a little butter and vanilla.
Second, we're taking a shortcut with the crust. A store-bought graham cracker crust works beautifully here. There's no need to make a pastry crust unless you want to.
Third, it's a wonderful make-ahead dessert. You can prepare the pie earlier in the day, refrigerate it until the filling sets, and add your whipped cream before serving.
And finally, this recipe comes with a bonus.
You'll have a lovely bowl of homemade chocolate pudding left over to enjoy while your pie chills. I certainly didn't complain!
Ingredients for Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cream Pie
You won't need anything fancy for this recipe. In fact, you might already have most of the ingredients in your pantry and refrigerator.
For the Homemade Chocolate Pudding

Use the full measurements from Mom's original chocolate pudding recipe:
- Granulated sugar
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Cornstarch
- Salt
- Milk
- Butter
- Vanilla extract
Recipe note: Insert Mom's exact original quantities here before publishing. The earlier ¾-batch amounts should not be substituted for the full batch.
For the Crust and Topping
- 1 prepared 9-inch regular graham cracker pie crust
- Homemade sweetened whipped cream or thawed whipped topping
- Miniature chocolate chips, for garnish
That's it!
I used a regular store-bought graham cracker crust, not a deep-dish crust. You'll have more pudding than the crust can hold, and that's perfectly fine.
How to Make Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cream Pie

This pie comes together in a few simple steps. The most important part is taking your time while cooking the chocolate pudding so it turns out smooth, rich, and creamy.
Step 1: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a medium-to-large saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
Make sure everything is well combined before adding the milk. This helps distribute the cornstarch evenly and reduces the chance of lumps.
Step 2: Add the Milk
Slowly pour in the milk, whisking as you go.
Continue whisking until the cocoa mixture is evenly incorporated and the filling looks smooth.
Don't worry if the mixture looks thin at this stage. That's exactly what we want.
Step 3: Cook the Chocolate Pudding
Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring or whisking frequently, especially along the bottom and edges of the pan.
As the mixture heats, it will begin to thicken.
Keep stirring until the pudding reaches a gentle bubble and becomes thick and creamy. Let it bubble gently for about 1 minute while stirring, or follow the cooking time in Mom's original recipe.
You want a pudding that's thick enough to coat the back of a spoon but still soft enough to pour into your crust.
Step 4: Add Butter and Vanilla
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter melts completely and the filling is silky smooth.
At this point, you'll have a saucepan full of wonderful homemade chocolate pudding.
And yes, you're absolutely allowed to taste a little!
Step 5: Fill the Graham Cracker Crust

Place your prepared graham cracker crust on a flat surface.
Carefully spoon or pour the warm chocolate pudding directly into the crust, filling it just below the rim.
Don't overfill it. Remember, we'll be adding whipped cream later.
If there's pudding left in the saucepan, spoon it into a separate bowl or individual serving dishes.
There's your bonus dessert!
Step 6: Chill Until Set
Allow the pie to cool briefly on the counter, then transfer it to the refrigerator.
Chill for at least 2 hours, or until the filling is completely cold and firm enough to slice. A longer chill may be needed for clean slices.
Step 7: Add the Whipped Cream

Once the pie is thoroughly chilled, it's time for the fun part!
I happened to have homemade whipped cream left over from another dessert, so I transferred it to a piping bag and added decorative swirls around the outside edge of the pie.

Then I added another swirl in the center.
If you don't have homemade whipped cream, thawed whipped topping works beautifully, too.
You can pipe it on for a decorative finish or simply spread it over the top.
Step 8: Garnish and Serve

Sprinkle miniature chocolate chips over the whipped cream.
Slice with a sharp knife, serve cold, and enjoy!
What to Expect from this Pie

Oh, friends. The creamy chocolate filling. That crisp graham cracker crust. The light, fluffy whipped cream. The "bite" of the mini chocolate chips? It all merged together into delicious bite after bite, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
More than anything, I appreciated the ease of this recipe. Sure, you could make the filling from instant pudding but the (very few) minutes it takes to make homemade? It's so worth it!
Tips for the Best Chocolate Cream Pie
Whisk the dry ingredients thoroughly. This helps keep the cornstarch from clumping when you add the milk.
Keep an eye on the saucepan. Milk-based pudding can scorch if the heat is too high or the mixture isn't stirred often enough.
Don't overfill your crust. A regular graham cracker crust won't hold the entire batch of pudding. Leave a little room at the top for the whipped cream.
Chill the pie thoroughly. If you cut it too soon, the filling may be softer than you'd like. I recommend giving it extra refrigerator time if you're serving it for company.
Add the whipped cream after the filling cools. Otherwise, the warmth of the pudding can cause your beautiful topping to melt.
Use a sharp knife for serving. Wiping the blade between slices will help keep those layers looking pretty.
Fun Variations to Try

I love this pie exactly as it is, but there are several ways to make it your own.
Chocolate Cookie Crust: Swap the graham cracker crust for a chocolate cookie crust if you want an even richer chocolate dessert.
Chocolate Shavings: Instead of miniature chocolate chips, shave a little semisweet chocolate over the whipped cream.
Chocolate and Peanut Butter: Add a thin layer of peanut butter to the bottom of the crust before filling, if you love that classic flavor combination.
Extra Whipped Cream: Skip the piping bag and pile the whole top with a generous layer of whipped cream. Sometimes simple is best!
Individual Pudding Cups: If you don't have a pie crust handy, you can serve the entire batch as old-fashioned chocolate pudding. That's what I intended to do in the first place!
How to Store Chocolate Cream Pie
Keep this pie covered in the refrigerator.
For the best appearance and texture, enjoy it within 2–3 days, particularly if you've topped it with homemade whipped cream.
If you're making the pie ahead for a holiday or family gathering, I recommend preparing the chocolate filling and crust the day before, then decorating with whipped cream closer to serving time.
The extra pudding should also be refrigerated in a covered container and enjoyed within 3–4 days.
I don't recommend freezing this pie. Cornstarch-thickened pudding can become watery or change texture when thawed.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a store-bought graham cracker crust?
Absolutely! That's exactly what I used. A regular 9-inch prepared graham cracker crust makes this recipe especially easy.
Can I use homemade whipped cream?
Yes, and it's delicious! I used leftover homemade whipped cream and piped it into decorative swirls. Just make sure the chocolate filling is completely cold before adding it.
Can I use Cool Whip instead?
Of course. Thaw it in the refrigerator according to the package directions, then spread or pipe it onto the chilled pie.
Why didn't my chocolate pie set firmly?
The pudding may not have cooked long enough to activate the cornstarch fully, or the pie may need more refrigerator time. Make sure the pudding thickens properly on the stovetop and allow the finished pie to chill thoroughly.
Will I have leftover chocolate pudding?
Yes! Mom's original recipe makes more than you'll need for a regular graham cracker crust. Spoon the extra into a bowl, refrigerate it, and enjoy a little treat while you're waiting for the pie to set.
Can I make this chocolate cream pie the day before?
Definitely. In fact, preparing it the day before gives the pudding plenty of time to firm up. Add the whipped cream topping before serving for the prettiest presentation.
Can I make my own graham cracker crust?
Certainly! A homemade graham cracker crust would be wonderful. Just make sure it's prepared and cooled before adding the warm chocolate filling.

A Sweet Little Reminder

There's something special about recipes that remind us of the people we love.
For me, this pie will always bring back memories of Mom standing at the stove, stirring her homemade chocolate pudding.
I didn't set out to create a new recipe that afternoon. I just wanted a little taste of something familiar and comforting.
But one bowl of pudding led to a graham cracker crust, a few swirls of whipped cream, and a brand-new dessert.
Funny how that happens, isn't it?
Sometimes the best things come together when we're not even trying.
And sometimes all it takes is a little chocolate pudding.
